Dish Inspiration for Chickpea Aloo Burgers

Every week my son craves to eat burger and I try to be creative with my burger patties to squeeze in extra nutrients. This week I tried Chickpeas and Aloo sliders and it was a big hit. The burger patties along with other ingredients tasted absolutely delicious and we are adding this recipe to our weekly menu.

I think this would be the perfect recipe to share for long weekend as everyone loves grilling during hot weather. The burger patties came together super quickly and I used some fun ingredients to add flavors to it. The patties can be made ahead of time and they freeze well for few weeks. This would be a perfect lunch box option for kids.

How to make Chickpea Aloo Burgers?

Burger Patties:

  • Mash the potatoes and chickpeas: Start by boiling potatoes until they are soft and then mash them thoroughly. Similarly, drain and rinse canned chickpeas, and then mash them until smooth. Mixing them together will form the base of your burger patty, providing both texture and flavor.

  • Combine with spices and aromatics: Add a flavorful blend of spices and aromatics to the mashed potatoes and chickpeas. This includes salt for seasoning, red chili powder for heat, garam masala for depth of flavor, finely chopped green chilies for a spicy kick, minced garlic for savory notes, grated ginger for warmth, lime juice for a touch of tanginess, and chopped cilantro for freshness. Mix these ingredients well to ensure they are evenly distributed throughout the mixture.

  • Form round patties: Take portions of the mixture and shape them into round patties, each approximately 4 inches in diameter. This size ensures they fit well within the burger buns and are easy to cook evenly.

  • Cook the patties: Heat a flat pan or skillet over medium heat and add oil. Once the oil is hot, carefully place the patties in the pan and cook until they are golden brown and crispy on both sides. Cooking them in oil imparts a delicious crispy exterior while keeping the inside tender and flavorful.

  • Store for later use: Allow the cooked patties to cool completely before transferring them to an airtight container. Store the patties in the refrigerator for up to 2 days, ensuring they remain fresh and ready to use when assembling the burgers.

Assemble Burgers:

  • Prepare the burger buns: Heat the burger buns on a grill or in a skillet until they are warm and lightly toasted. This step enhances the texture and flavor of the buns, providing a crisp exterior and soft interior.
  • Apply Perinaise: Spread a layer of Perinaise, a spicy and tangy sauce, on both halves of the toasted burger buns. This adds a burst of flavor and helps to bind the ingredients together.

  • Add lettuce: Place a crisp lettuce leaf on the bottom half of each bun. The lettuce adds a refreshing crunch and serves as a bed for the burger patty.
  • Reheat the burger patties: Reheat the cooked burger patties in the same skillet used earlier. Once heated through, place a small piece of cheese on top of each patty and cover the skillet with a lid. This allows the cheese to melt and envelop the patty in creamy goodness.
  • Assemble the burgers: Carefully place the cheese-topped patties on the lettuce-lined buns. Add sliced tomatoes on top of each patty for juiciness and freshness. Then, top the tomatoes with tangy pickled onions for a burst of flavor and texture.

  • Complete the burger: Place the top half of the burger bun over the assembled ingredients, creating a delicious and satisfying burger stack. Secure each burger with a toothpick inserted through the center, adorned with a pickled jalapeƱo for an extra kick of spice and flavor.

  • Serve and enjoy: Serve the assembled Chickpea Aloo Burgers with a side of ketchup and fries for a complete and satisfying meal. Enjoy the fusion of flavors and textures in every bite!

Storage:Ā

  • Refrigerate: Cool patties, store in airtight container in fridge for 2 days.
  • Separate Layers: Use parchment paper to prevent sticking.
  • Label: Write name and date on container.
  • Freeze (Optional): Wrap individually, freeze for 3 months.
  • Thaw: Move to fridge overnight.
  • Reheat: Warm in pan until 165Ā°F (74Ā°C).

Serving suggestions:

  • Pair with Fries: Serve alongside crispy fries for a classic burger experience.
  • Fresh Salad: Accompany with a side salad of mixed greens, cherry tomatoes, and a light vinaigrette for a refreshing contrast.
  • Pickles and Coleslaw: Add a tangy kick with pickles and a creamy coleslaw on the side for a traditional burger meal.
  • Sweet Potato Wedges: Substitute regular fries with sweet potato wedges for a healthier alternative.
  • Dipping Sauces: Offer a variety of dipping sauces like ketchup, barbecue sauce, or aioli for extra flavor options.

Expert Tips:

  • Ensure thorough mashing of potatoes and chickpeas to achieve a smooth consistency, aiding in better binding of ingredients and texture of the patties.
  • Refrigerate the formed patties for at least 30 minutes before cooking. This helps firm up the mixture, making it easier to handle and preventing patties from falling apart during cooking.
  • Cook patties over medium heat, allowing them to cook evenly without burning. Avoid overcrowding the pan, as this can result in uneven cooking and steaming instead of frying.
  • Toast the burger buns until golden brown to add a crunchy texture and enhance the overall flavor of the burger.
