Kanda Bhaji Waffles

Kanda Bhaji are onion fritters made with onions and chickpea flour. They are crispy and flavorful. Now you can enjoy a healthier s version of these fritters using a waffle maker. Servings 6 Mini Waffles


  • 2 cups sliced onions
  • 1 cup chickpea flour more if needed
  • 3/4 cup rice flour more if needed
  • 2 green chilies chopped
  • 1/2 cup chopped cilantro
  • Salt as needed
  • 1 tsp red chili powder
  • 1 tsp raw mango powder
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp asafetida powder
  • 2-3 tablespoon oil spray
  • 1/2 tsp Chaat Masala


  • In a bowl slice onions and sprinkle salt and leave for 15 minutes
  • Once the water is released, add the flours little by little and add spices, green chilies and cilantro
  • Form a thick batter, add more flour if needed to help absorb water
  • Heat waffle maker and spray both sides with oil
  • Once heated drop the batter on the waffle maker and form a thin layer
  • Close it and cook till crispy around 7-10 minutes
  • Serve immediately with chutneys and chat masala


Tips and Tricks
  1. Don’t let onions sit for long as it releases more water over time
  2. To make them crunchier add more rice flour
  3. If the onions release more water add flour to balance it
  4. You can replace rice flour with semolina
  5. Leave the batter in for longer so they can get crispier
  6. You can skip the green chilies if making for kids
  7. You can reheat the waffles in the waffle maker
  8. Enjoy them right away
