Dal Bhaji

It is a twist to Pav Bhaji, although I have to say this does not replace Pav Bhaji.
We all love Pav Bhaji in our house and unfortunately it is a treat food for us. We can't eat Pav Bhaji every week as its not completely healthy. So this is my replacement for Pav Bhaji that I can make every week and it hits those taste buds and keep the Pav Bhaji craving away for some time. This a wholesome meal and tastes absolutely delicious.
Will you believe me this bhaji is made without potatoes? I replaced potatoes with dals and it has veggies to make it hearty. My son who loves Pav bhaji like we do, loves this version. It has protein, carbs and lots of fiber from the veggies. Amul butter adds a nice flavor and when everything comes together it tastes so delicious. My mother in law who is jain thought the dal version tastes much better than adding raw bananas. She loved this recipe and now she makes this dish often.
You can skip the butter to make this vegan and you can skip onions, garlic and ginger to make this jain.

Ingredients
  

  • 1/2 cup yellow moong dal cooked
  • 1/2 cup Toovar dal cooked
  • 1/2 cup Lentil dal cooked
  • 1 and 1/2 cups onions chopped
  • 4 plum tomatoes chopped
  • 1/2 cup green bell peppers chopped
  • 1 cup green peas cooked
  • 1/2 cup cauliflower cooked optional
  • 4 cloves of garlic chopped 2 tablespoon
  • 1 tablespoon ginger chopped
  • salt as needed
  • 4 tsp pav bhaji masala
  • 1 cup chopped cilantro
  • 2 tablespoon Amul butter
  • 1 tablespoon green chillies chopped
  • 1/2 tsp hing powder
  • 2 tablespoon kashmiri chili powder
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 tablespoon lime juice
  • 3-4 lime wedges to serve
  • 2-3 toasted bread to serve

Instructions
 

  • Cook the soaked dals and peas and cauliflower in an instant pot or pressure cooker for 20 minutes on high pressure
  • Chop all veggies and have it ready
  • In a wide pan, on medium heat melt 1 tablespoon of butter, add chopped green chillies, ginger and garlic and let it sizzle
  • Add cumin seeds and hing powder and mix it well
  • Add chopped onions and cook the onions till translucent
  • Add chopped bell pepper and mix it and then add 1 cup of water
  • Now use a masher to mash the veggies while the water evaporates
  • Once mashed well, add tomatoes and peas and cauliflower and mash everything well
  • After 5 minutes once the veggies soften, add the dals and mash everything one more time
  • Add Pav bhaji masala, kashmiri chili powder and salt and let it cook for 5-10 minutes. Add water if needed
  • Mix everything well and squeeze fresh lime juice
  • Garnish with cilantro and 1 tablespoon of Amul butter
  • Serve with chopped raw onions, lime wedges and toast
